Moving from the Netherlands to Catalonia
We, your hosts at Torre Nova, are Jacqueline Brakel and Geert van Heijningen. In July 2007 we moved with our children from Amsterdam to Catalonia. Besides the climate, particularly the quality of life appeals to us. After one and a half year search looking for the adequate property, during which we saw everything from ruins to priceless palaces, we found the perfect spot for our dream holiday resort: Torre Nova. Now, almost four years later, we have settled and we really feel at home.
The story of the Marquis
Around the 19th century the Marquis of Villa Palma had two sons. As usual in the nobility, the eldest son inherited the castle (the 'Torre of Claramunt'). The youngest son, the Marquis of Gironella, then decided to build a huge house on the hill opposite the castle, in order to equal his brother. This was the villa, 'casa señorial' Torre Nova. In the late 30s of the last century the ownership changed hands. Since the '80s the major part of the house was no longer in use, until our arrival in 2007.
Sustainable grandeur
Thanks to the comprehensive renovation, Torre Nova is now preserved for the future and has begun its second life with us. We deliberately chose for an authentic, cozy, small, luxurious holiday resort, with historic, comfortable apartments.
During the renovation, we paid a lot of attention to the balance between the modern comfort requirements and yet maintaining its original grandeur. Around the house we created a Mediterranean garden with terraces and a large lawn with a pool overlooking the green valley.
Sustainability is an important aspect of preserving the environment. Torra Nova has its own water spring and we also use renewable energy. The renovation was performed by the 'cradle to cradle' principle. All construction debris have been recycled and we used environmentally friendly construction materials. The water in the pool is treated using a method based on natural salt. Kind to the environment and a blessing for the swimmer ....
